ASHWAUBENON – The Bay Port girls volleyball team is headed to its first state championship match in program history.

The Pirates got there with a stunningly dominant victory Nov. 6 over No. 2 seed Kimberly in a Division 1 semifinal at a loud and raucous Resch Center.

Third-seeded Bay Port won 25-22, 25-16, 25-12 and will play No. 1 seed Divine Savior Holy Angels on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the title match.

Bay Port improves its record to 26-8 with the win. The Pirates are at the state tournament for the second time. They lost in the quarterfinals in 2024 in their only other trip.

Kimberly beat Bay Port 2-0 at the Notre Dame Invite early in the season, but the state matchup had a much different outcome.

“We definitely knew it was going to be a big game because of the closeness of our teams, and we’ve played them before earlier in the nonconference games,” senior outside hitter Brenna Derousseau said. “So we knew it was going to be a good match and that there was going to be a lot of fans and the atmosphere was going to be jumping, so I feel like keeping ourselves on our side calm, playing our volleyball, helped us.”

Derousseau was a major factótum in the victory. She finished with 23 kills and had a .442 hitting percentage.

Junior outside hitter Alexia Stephens added 11 kills for the Pirates.

“These two are our arms we’re going to go to. We trust these two,” Bay Port coach Mackenzie Hurst said. “I think a really great weapon for us is our ability to spread our offense, and that’s kudos to Meghan [Bruss], but also really great defense and really great service receive. But when push comes to shove, we’re going to get the ball to these two and they’re going to take care of it.”

Bruss, a senior setter, had 38 assists and nine digs for the Pirates. Stephens had 17 digs and senior libero Taylor Russell had 13 digs.

“First set I was kind of feeling my grounds, like where I wanted to put it and stuff, and then I also talked to Meghan in between the two sets and we kind of figured out our connection a little bit better,” Derousseau said. “And then I started visualizing the block a little bit more, so I found open spots.”

Hurst said the Pirates are enjoying each match as it comes during the postseason, and now there’s only one match left.

“We were just thankful for another day of volleyball together again,” Hurst said. “So we knew that this could be it or if we could get to come back tomorrow, so we had a little practice this morning and talked about how we were going to finish this together. … We did a really great job.”

Divine Savior Holy Angels is at state for the fifth consecutive season. The Dashers won three consecutive titles from 2022 to 2024 and finished runner-up last season.

They advanced with a 21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-14 victory over fifth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran in the other semifinal.

Bay Port lost to the Dashers 2-1 at the DSHA Invite a few weeks ago.

Stephens said the Pirates will need the same confidence they had against Kimberly in the championship match, but she thinks they can take their game to another level.

“We just showed ourselves today that we can beat Kimberly,” Stephens said. “And before, I think we were going into it being like we know it’s going to be a good match, but I think we really focused and we put all our energy in it. And so, yeah, I think we can do better.”
